From storytelling to story jumper

There are lots of emotions, imagination, and excitement in storytelling in the classroom. As a primary level teacher, I observed many grade students in storytelling and fairy tale lessons. And I discovered that the most enjoyable and relaxing moment of the fairy tale lesson is role-playing. Role-playing is a motivational and collaborative way of learning the language.

Stories and fairy tales hook kids’ imagination and convey them to the world of magic. I really love when my students immerse themselves into the world of fairy tales through reading, listening, and playing. Their eyes sparkle with curiosity and wonder during the lesson.   We have a reading corner in our classroom and there are lots of books for young learners, however living in the era of information technology why not use audio, video, or e-books in the English language classroom. Last academic year was tough both for teachers and students due to pandemic; teachers taught and still are teaching learners online. I wondered how to conduct activities based on fairy tales, and I found a very useful website where I can create stories and fairy tales for my learners and post them on telegram.

storyjumper.com

Now I use stories from storyjumper.com in my classroom through internet access. It’s free for creating stories and if you want to download you need to pay for the website.

Here are some stories that I created for my students.

Earth Day - Every Day!

"Earth provides enough to satisfy every man’s needs, but not every man’s greed''. ― Mahatma Gandhi

What Earth Day is about? What activities can be relevant to teach Earth Day?

As Earth Day is just around the corner I created resources that can help learners to understand that even at a young age they can be part of making the Earth a healthier planet.

Every year on April 22, people around the world celebrate Earth Day. It is a day to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This special day first held on April 22, 1970. It is a day when people care and protect the planet from pollution and damage. It is vitally important to let the learners know that they are making a valuable contribution by participating in Earth day. They can make a change on earth by doing even small things like cleaning, planting trees and flowers, recycling and reusing some plastic bottles or papers, save water when they have a shower or wash dishes.  Celebrating this holiday is not only giving information about this day but also building cultural awareness of the holiday through learning how people around the world celebrate it. The resource includes 5 pages of Earth Day activities: Brainstorming Reading, words search activity, spider web words vocabulary, unscrambling the words and writing the words in alphabetical order, and Earth Day acrostic poem. pdf:

Free Days of the week teaching resources

 Days of the week worksheets.

This resource includes 10 pages of days of the week's fun activities: pencil-shaped days of the week cards, matching days of the week names, writing and guessing missing the letters and days of the week.

Students will practice learning and saying days of the week through cards, games, and activities.

There are several activities that I use in my classroom:

1. Put in order.

Put days of the week cards randomly on the table and ask students to put the days in order. You can conduct this activity organizing group or pair game.

2. Run and bring!

Divide the class into two teams; ask them to stand in two rows. Each student from each group should be ready to run and bring the day that teacher asks. A student who brings the card first will be the winner.

3. “Cross the river”

This game looks like role play; you need a crocodile mask or costume, days of the week cards, and inspire students to be swimmers. Put the cards on the floor in order or you can draw a big river on the floor and put the cards, ask the crocodile (who plays the role of crocodile) to stand along with the cards. A student should play the role of the swimmer and say days of the week while swimming. If a student can’t say the name of the day the crocodile eats his/her up.

4. “Throw me day!” game

You need a ball in the classroom to play this game. Ask one student as a leader of the game to take the ball and throw it to anyone saying any day of the week. For example Monday!

The next student who catches the ball should say the next day – Tuesday. The game can be played by changing leaders until you sure the days of the week memorized well.

Calm activities like matching the days of the week and writing missing letters help students to work in groups or pairs creatively and logically.

Have fun!

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PEACE

 Fun Peace Day activities

"Peace begins with a smile" ~ Mother Teresa

What can be better than to start a Peace Day lesson with a smile? International Day of Peace is celebrated all over the world on the 21st of September.
Teaching children about peace means raise awareness about life with happiness, negotiation, harmony, inner-peace, respect for each other, protecting peaceful life and environment, living in a friendly relationship with neighbors, and much more.
I was thinking about activities that can be useful to build a culture of peace before starting to create them. These worksheets include 5 pages of Reading comprehension, PEACE acrostic poem templates, Vocabulary awareness,  “Peace Day” coloring page, and “Peace Day Kite” crafting. Absolutely free.

I strongly believe that all of us should protect our peace on earth, and teaching children about peace means a lot in their lives. I also hope activities that I created on this theme will help our students to become critical and creative thinkers.

Insects Reading Stories

Insects reading stories.
It's enjoyable to read about insects, plants, animals, and people. Whenever I create activities and worksheets I keep in mind my learners' interests, try to look at learning with their eyes. And stories that I create to read are written in a fun and joyful way. In creating this resource I wanted my students to look at insects as interesting and most intelligent creatures. Teachers can conduct Answer the Questions task, True/False activity, or "What? When? Why?" conversation.
